Correct cuts, healthy trees

Tree Pruning and Garden Tree Care on Sydney's North Shore

Careful pruning of small trees, ornamentals, fruit trees and hedges, timed to each species and cut so the tree heals well.

Tree pruning on the North Shore is mostly about restraint. Grandeur Gardening provides tree pruning and garden tree care for the trees that make these gardens what they are: magnolias, crepe myrtles, maples, ornamental pears, citrus and stone fruit, and the hedges that frame them. Pruned correctly, they reward you for decades. Lopped badly, they never quite recover.

What our tree care covers

Small tree pruning

Formative pruning of young trees so they grow into a sound shape, canopy thinning to let light through without butchering the silhouette, deadwood removal and safe reduction of low or crossing branches. All work is on trees of a size we can prune properly and safely from the ground or low access.

Ornamental and fruit tree care

Species-correct pruning at the right time of year: crepe myrtles pruned for flower without the dreaded knuckles, magnolias touched lightly and rarely, roses and hydrangeas cut for the wood that flowers, and fruit trees balanced between shape and crop. It is the kind of pruning that shows a season later, in flowers and fruit rather than stubs.

Hedging and screens

Formal hedges held crisp and dense, and overgrown screens brought back gradually so they thicken instead of thinning. Renovation pruning of neglected hedges is staged over seasons where the species needs it.

Safe branch reduction

Branches over paths, driveways and rooflines reduced with proper cuts back to growth points, keeping clearance without leaving the tree disfigured or vulnerable to decay.

Honest scope: what we do not do

We are gardeners and horticulturalists, not arborists, and North Shore tree regulation is genuinely strict. For large tree removals, protected trees, or council-regulated work, we can refer or coordinate with a qualified arborist. We do not perform large removals, prepare arborist reports or handle council approvals, and you should be wary of anyone without qualifications who says they will.

Suburbs we service

We provide tree pruning in Wahroonga, St Ives, Pymble, Turramurra and across the Upper North Shore. Related services: garden maintenance, horticulture, garden design and landscaping.

Frequently asked questions

Do you prune small trees and hedges?

Yes. Small tree pruning, ornamental and fruit tree care and hedging are core services. We prune for health and shape, at the right time of year for each species, with clean cuts that heal properly.

Do I need council approval for tree removal on the North Shore?

Often, yes. Much of the Upper North Shore falls under Ku-ring-gai Council tree controls, and many species and sizes are protected. Before any removal, check with the council and engage a qualified arborist. We can point you in the right direction.

Do you handle large tree removals?

No. Large removals, work on protected trees and anything requiring council permits or arborist reports is specialist work. For large tree removals, protected trees, or council-regulated work, we can refer or coordinate with a qualified arborist.

When is the best time to prune trees on the North Shore?

It depends on the species. Deciduous ornamentals are usually structured in winter dormancy, spring-flowering trees are pruned after they flower, and fruit trees are timed to balance fruiting wood and shape. We schedule pruning by species, not by convenience.

"The crepe myrtles have never flowered like this."

Pruned correctly for once, not lopped. The difference showed within a single season.

"Honest about what they could and could not do."

They shaped everything under six metres beautifully and referred us to an arborist for the big gum, exactly as it should be.
